As with other 2025 Pride events, Notts Pride rightly banned political parties from attending.
The ongoing assault on trans rights has led to the UK falling further down the ILGA Rainbow list. This was due in large part to the Supreme Court ruling in April. But with the right wing Labour government limiting access to trans healthcare, reviving Section 28 for trans people (in its new RSHE guidance), and almost certain to accept the forthcoming trans-exclusionary EHRC “Code of Practice”, we're soon going to be dropping into Hungary or Georgia territory, if not Russia.
In such circumstances, rather than just being a party, Pride reverts to being a protest. And that's good. We're going to need a lot of protests. Not least outside Wes Streeting's house. I hope this one went well.
I didn't go. I went to Gainsborough with my mother, walked by the river, and had a Lincolnshire sausage in a riverside cafe.
Some days, no matter what, all I want to do is head off up North.
Trans Rights are looking more than a bit sh**e at the mo. FWIW, I completely support the exclusion of MPs at Notts Pride. There may be a few good eggs (no pun intended) but in general, the current lot don't seem much different from the last lot.
ReplyDeleteI did keep an eye out for you in the crowd 🙂
Good to hear you enjoyed the walk and the nibbles.
Ah, so you went, did you. Do you usually go?
DeleteOn MPs: I'd vote for Nadia Whittome if I was in her constituency, but most of the rest can get in the sea as far as I'm concerned.
Well, I can well understand the organisers' decision given what I hear coming from the UK these days. One day, protests won't be needed any more but until then ... Sue x
ReplyDeleteTrans Pride London was huge apparently. And coverage in the media... next to nothing :|
DeleteI’ve been watching it all unfold from the State side, and honestly? It’s terrifying (and just as bad here). Pride as protest isn’t just appropriate—it’s necessary. And yeah, we’re going to need a lot more of them.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t go to Pride either this year, but not for lack of wanting to. An event for my kids took priority this year. Still, seeing posts like this reminds me how important it is to stay engaged, even when it’s exhausting.
Hi Michelle x
DeleteYes, the right moved in on trans issues as a political strategy in both countries, though it's perhaps only here in the UK that a group of feminists were adopted as their poodles, who yet somehow regard themselves as heroic warriors in the great feminist tradition... ffs.
