Glad you like the article :)

Yes, femme works for me, better than trans... although I do identify as trans as well, because... well, just because really.Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17147186679298442560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665598552477308153.post-2417751336292921712018-04-28T13:09:46.856+01:002018-04-28T13:09:46.856+01:00This is a well written article. I also prefer to call myself transvestite and after too many years of struggling with identity, I recently realized I am femme, nothing more, nothing less and present myself as such. Yes, fem...Thanks, Jack. I'll do likewise... :)

Yes, femme is difficult to define. It's not just feminine or a feminine side because, as you say, those differ by history and culture. And feminine straight women are not femme (although they might be). And femmes are not necessarily feminine in those terms anyway (tomboy femme is certainly a thing). And it's definitely not submissive (although it can be). And it's not a continuum with femme at one end and butch at another. Perhaps it's easier to say what it isn't.

I also noted on Trans Express that you “really, really, do not like” the term transvestite because of its “really bad connotations historically”. Well, it's a personal term, one I still use. Perhaps such usage is limited to the UK nowadays. But I don't use it in this way: “a male identifying person who crossdresses in order to express the femme side”. One, I only use it for myself, not generally; other people will have their own words. Two, it's not about expressing a “femme side”, which is a different usage of femme. I don't do femme, I am femme :)Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17147186679298442560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665598552477308153.post-34883138029265734092018-04-23T09:05:26.586+01:002018-04-23T09:05:26.586+01:00I posted a comment to this article over at Crossdr...I posted a comment to this article over at Crossdream Life. I might as well repeat it here:

This is a very interesting and well written piece.

I sometimes compare the complexity of the femme/butch dynamics to understanding the movement of objects in space in an Ensteinian universe as opposed to a Newtonian. There is no fixed point and motion is always a matter for moving in relationship to another object. Without other objects it is impossible to see if an object is standing still or moving.

As femme/butch goes this makes it exceedingly hard to come up with a good definition of what femme and butch is, since what constitutes feminine and masculine gender expressions will vary over time and between cultures and subcultures. If femme and butch are partly defined by the other, there is no way of finding a solid definition of either.

Some have tried to associate femme with submissive and butch with dominant. I did some research on lesbian erotica a few years ago, and such a distinction made sense for some of the stories. Still, the femme has her own way of being dominant, and the butch lesbian may be a servant, serving the femme's needs. So no, it is not that simple – as you point out.

That does not make the phenomena less real, and there is clearly something in many of us that brings us closer to one of the "poles" of this. So many of the female to male crossdreamers I have know gravitate towards the butch pole and many of the male to female enjoy the femme life.

But again, this is not clear cut. I have heard of femme trans men. Julia Serano thought of herself as a tomboy, while actively defending the femme expression among trans women.

Thank you for sharing!Jack Molayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03629363646482611722noreply@blogger.com
